DeepGreen will remain free of charge in 2027

Last year, we announced that DeepGreen, the delivery service for open-access articles, would become a paid service in the future as part of a subscription model.

DeepGreen is a unique community-based service that supports libraries in Germany in publishing open-access articles in repositories. The service is jointly operated by the KOBV , the Bavarian State Library, and the University Library of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

The KOBV Board of Trustees has decided to suspend the financial contribution for 2027 once again, meaning that DeepGreen’s operations will continue to be funded by the participating institutions in 2027.

DeepGreen will therefore remain free of charge in 2027 as well. We are continuing to work on ensuring the long-term sustainability of the service and expect to implement a subscription model starting in 2028. Further information on this will follow at the end of the year.

DeepGreen User Meeting at BiblioCon 2026 in Berlin

This year’s DeepGreen user meeting will take place on May 21, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at BiblioCon in Berlin.

The Future of Licenses – A Future for DeepGreen?

The main focus of the meeting will be the future of the licensing landscape in Germany. Participants will discuss scenarios related to current developments at the intersection of DEAL, Publish&Read agreements, Diamond Open Access, and AI, as well as the implications for DeepGreen. Dr. Hildegard Schäffler, department head at the Bavarian State Library and a licensing expert, will provide expert input.

Happy holidays and a healthy New Year 2026

The year 2025 slowly draws to a close, and we would like to take this opportunity to look back on the important events of the past twelve months with you .

2025 was dominated by the major topic of the future proportional financing of DeepGreen by the participating institutions. With the first concrete proposal for a financing model, we approached you in the middle of the year to incorporate your views into our plans. An important result was a number of constructive suggestions on how we could improve the financing model. While we continue to work on this, at the end of 2025 the KOBV Curatorium decided that DeepGreen will continue to be financed from the partner institutions’ own funds in 2026. Information on the revised cost model will follow in 2026.

With regard to the technical infrastructure, we were able to implement a number of further developments in collaboration with Cottage Labs. For example, name variations can now be excluded in the affiliations file repositories. In addition, important updates that were essential for the stability and maintainability of the service were completed: DeepGreen was updated to a new Python version and moved to a new server infrastructure, and a new sFTP for publisher data and the Airflow process management tool were implemented.

We are delighted that DeepGreen continued to grow in 2025. At the beginning of the year, a cooperation agreement was signed with the publisher Duncker & Humblot. In addition, four institutional repositories decided to use DeepGreen. As of December 15, 2025, we were able to make a total of 109,439 articles available to our repositories.

Finally, we would like to thank all repositories, publishers, and cooperation partners for their interest and excellent collaboration. At the same time, we look forward to an exciting 2026, which we want to shape together with you.

DeepGreen will remain free of charge in 2026

In spring 2025, we announced that the open access data delivery service DeepGreen would become a paid service in the future. In the summer of this year, we conducted a non-binding survey with initial concrete information on the planned pricing structure. Based on numerous constructive responses, the cost model is now being further revised. The KOBV Curatorium has therefore decided that DeepGreen will continue to be financed from the operating institutions’ own funds for the time being in the coming year.

DeepGreen will therefore remain free of charge for all participants in 2026. Further information on the cost model and schedule will also follow next year.

New feature enhancement: new sFTP for publishers and Airflow

Last week, the latest DeepGreen update was rolled out to the production system. This update implemented a new sFTP for the delivery of publisher data, as well as the Airflow process monitoring tool. Airflow will make routing in DeepGreen more efficiently controllable in the future.

Based on feedback we received at BiblioCon, the update adjusted the metadata mapping to METS-MODS so that the respective corresponding authors are recognizable. MODS does not offer a predefined XML field or attribute to pass on the information about the corresponding author, so this will now be entered in the roleTerm field.

Review Open Access Days 2025

This year’s Open Access Days took place in beautiful Constance from September 17-19, 2025. DeepGreen was represented with two contributions this time.

The poster “The DeepGreen client – Efficient and innovative data delivery” was presented at the poster marketplace. The poster is dedicated to a client that uses the web API to import DeepGreen articles into the repositories, whereby the import is automated and controllable for the users. The DeepGreen client is to be implemented as a prototype for OPUS 4 repositories by the end of the year.

DeepGreen was also part of the workshop “Open Access as an organizational and institutional challenge”. This workshop dealt with the challenges of financing and sustaining open access infrastructures. DeepGreen was presented as one of six services.

We were very pleased with the intensive exchange and hope to meet again next year.

Looking back: DeepGreen user meeting at the BiblioCon 2025

This year’s DeepGreen user meeting took place on 25.06.2025 as part of BiblioCon 2025 in Bremen. 18 users took part in the event.

At the beginning of the meeting, the technical developments of the past year and the new operating model were presented. We are currently working on a sustainable operating model and the repositories are to participate in the financing of the service at the beginning of next year.

The subsequent Q&A session led to a very constructive discussion, which resulted in the request for a list of arguments as to why libraries should pay for DeepGreen.

This was followed by a presentation on the current publishing negotiations and the planned community building measures.

This year, the DeepGreen client was presented in the input section. A prototype of an automated article retrieval system for Opus 4 repositories is to be developed this year as an alternative to SWORD. The participants discussed whether such a client would also be interesting for other types of repository software.

Finally, there was brief time for discussion in small groups. The opportunity to exchange ideas was well used and current challenges were discussed.

DeepGreen user meeting at the BiblioCon 2025 in Bremen

This year’s DeepGreen user meeting will take place on 25.06.2025 from 09:00 -10:30 in the Salon Roselius at BiblioCon 2025 in Bremen.

It will begin with a presentation of the technical innovations, the current publishing cooperations and the planned community building. In addition, the new operating and financing model will be presented in the first part of the event.

As a special topic, there will be a brief presentation of the planned DeepGreen client, and thus another way to automatically obtain DeepGreen articles without using the SWORD interface. Finally, users will have the opportunity to discuss current topics in small groups.

New publishing cooperation: Duncker & Humblot

We are very pleased to announce that DeepGreen has concluded a cooperation agreement with the publisher Duncker & Humblot.

The publisher’s portfolio currently comprises around 300 academic monographs and 25 academic journals and yearbooks from the fields of law and political science, economics and social sciences, history, political science, literature and philosophy.

Starting next week, Duncker & Humblot will deliver gold open access content to the DeepGreen data hub on a monthly basis.

DeepGreen is currently cooperating with 15 academic publishers.
