An important update for the DeepGreen data hub was completed on 25.07.2025. The production system was moved to a new server infrastructure and in this context DeepGreen was updated to Python version 3.11. This update was essential for the maintainability and stability of the service. After the maintenance work was completed, the SWORD interfaces for users were gradually reactivated.
We are pleased to announce that a cooperation agreement between DeepGreen, the publisher Springer Nature and MPDL Services gGmbH was signed on November 20th. DeepGreen will now officially process Springer Nature’s Open Access articles from the DEAL contract 2.0 and distribute them to the authorized repositories. We are looking forward to the future cooperation.
At the end of April, we applied for the Enter Award presented by iRights.Lab. The prize is intended to recognize initiatives that are committed to open access to research and is awarded in five categories (infrastructure, skills transfer, up-and-coming talent, pioneering achievement and cooperation). We are delighted to have been selected for the longlist today.
We are pleased to welcome two new repositories as DeepGreen participants since the end of January. The University of Erfurt will now use our service for the Digital Library of Thuringia. The Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg is also participating in DeepGreen with the institutional repository TUBAFpublication as part of the Saxon document and publication server Qucosa.

In October, DeepGreen concluded a new publisher-cooperation agreement with the American Chemical Society (ACS). The tests for the technical integration have started, so that the first data deliveries are expected to begin in early 2024.
In the area of repositories, we are happy to welcome data_UMR, the institutional repository of Philipps University Marburg, and MONARCH-Quocosa, the institutional repository of Chemnitz University of Technology, as new participants in DeepGreen.
On 06.11.23 another DeepGreen consultation took place for our participating repositories. After a presentation of current developments in DeepGreen (publishing cooperation with Copernicus, optimization of metadata mapping, DeepGreen & Elsevier DEAL), we reviewed the recent Open Access Days 2023, which took place in Berlin in September. In reviewing the discussions at this conference, we discussed possible service extensions to DeepGreen, such as metadata delivery without full-text and retrieval of individual full-texts via DOI matching. We also discussed a poster on the extension of the EZB interface, which was also presented at the Open Access Days. As a result, we identified the integration of the ROR ID in the EZB metadata as a priority for DeepGreen, as this would greatly facilitate institutional attribution. Other topics discussed were the handling of duplicates and error messages in the SWORD interface in DSpace. All participating repositories are explicitly invited to participate in this recurring exchange format.
We are pleased to announce a new publisher cooperation with the Göttingen-based open access publisher Copernicus. Copernicus supplies DeepGreen with article data from its portfolio of 48 Open Access journals from predominantly natural science disciplines. Since the start of data processing by DeepGreen last week, 131 articles have already been delivered to repositories.
We are excited to be part of the Open Access Days 2023 in Berlin this week. On Thursday 9/28/2013 we will be presenting our talk “Did you get what you paid for? Monitoring publisher data in DeepGreen” and hope to have a lively discussion. In our presentation, we will address the topic of monitoring publisher data. The goal of such monitoring is to improve quality and ensure complete data delivery through DeepGreen.
Since the start of pilot operations in 2021, the DeepGreen router has processed approximately 1.5 million documents and a data volume of approximately 7 TB. This data continues to be held for potential new participant repositories to provide them with direct data retrieval.
In order to continue to ensure searchability and perform error-free backups of this large amount of data, the storage infrastructure was reorganized and put into a tree structure in early September.
Earlier this week, several technical adjustments were made to DeepGreen Router. The metadata mapping mentioned in the last DeepGreen consultation meeting has now been integrated into the production system. This mapping fixes several errors in the transformation of JATS files into OPUS or METS metadata formats, such as missing author names or affiliation information. As part of this effort, a tool was also developed and integrated into the user interface that allows DeepGreen administrators to test the transformations using XML files.
Another important technical innovation in this rollout is a logging mechanism that makes it possible to monitor the processing of ZIP files provided by the publishers. This now enables simple and transparent troubleshooting, which was previously very complicated and time-consuming.
